18-Year-Old Lewis Hamilton Replacement – Kimi Antonella Set to Make F1 Debut at the Italian GP

Mercedes has confirmed that 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli, widely expected to replace Lewis Hamilton next season, will make his Formula 1 debut by driving George Russell’s car during the first practice session (FP1) at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
The announcement, made on Monday, revealed that Antonelli will take the wheel in FP1, with Russell sitting out the session. To provide further opportunities for the young driver, Mercedes also stated that Hamilton would miss a session later in the year, allowing Antonelli more time on the track.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the opportunity, Antonelli said, “Taking part in my first FP1 is going to be really special. I’m really excited to drive the W15 and share the track with so many amazing drivers. I can’t wait for it.”
Antonelli, who just celebrated his 18th birthday, is currently competing in Formula Two after being fast-tracked into the series following his victory in last year’s FRECA Championship. His rapid rise through the ranks has fueled speculation that he will replace Hamilton on a full-time basis next season.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently hinted that Antonelli might have already signed a contract to join the team next year, accidentally revealing the news during an interview before the Dutch Grand Prix. Wolff commented, “We will soon confirm who will be in the second seat, and what I have also said is that the two drivers currently in the car have our full support, 100 percent.”
With his upcoming debut at Monza, all eyes will be on Antonelli as he looks to impress and solidify his place in Formula 1.
