Adrian Newey has officially signed on as the managing technical partner for Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, marking a significant shift in the F1 landscape. Newey, who announced his departure from Red Bull Racing as Chief Technology Officer in May, will reportedly earn a basic salary of £20 million annually rising to $30 million with bonuses in his new role at Aston Martin. Additionally, it’s understood that he will become a shareholder in the team, aligning his long-term interests with the team’s success.
Starting on March 1, 2025, Newey will be based at Aston Martin’s Silverstone headquarters, where he will be instrumental in steering the team through a crucial phase. His responsibilities include managing the 2026 technical regulation changes, integrating Honda’s power units, utilizing advanced fuels developed by Aramco, and making the most of the team’s brand-new wind tunnel, considered one of the most advanced in the sport.
Newey’s reputation in Formula 1 is unparalleled, having guided teams to 25 world titles, cementing his legacy as the greatest technical mind in the sport’s history. Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, was ecstatic about the addition:
“This is monumental news. Adrian is the best in the world at what he does, and I’m incredibly proud to have him join us. His arrival is the most significant event since Aston Martin returned to Formula 1 and further demonstrates our ambition to fight for world championships.”
Stroll also highlighted how quickly the deal came together:
“As soon as Adrian became available, we knew this was an opportunity we couldn’t miss. Our initial conversations confirmed we had a shared vision for this once-in-a-lifetime project. Adrian is fiercely competitive, and when he saw the cutting-edge AMR Technology Campus, the talented team we’ve built, and our new wind tunnel, he knew we were serious about our goals. He’s on board because he believes we can win – and so do we.”
Newey shares this enthusiasm. He remarked on Stroll’s commitment to the sport, saying,
“I’m thrilled to be joining the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team. Lawrence’s dedication is truly inspiring – he’s the only majority team owner who is actively involved in the sport, and his passion is evident in everything he does. The new AMR Technology Campus and wind tunnel at Silverstone are not only state-of-the-art but also foster an incredible work environment.
“With partners like Honda and Aramco, all the key components are in place to make Aston Martin a world championship-winning team, and I’m eager to help achieve that goal.”
With his lucrative contract and shareholder position, Newey’s involvement is seen as a critical move in Aston Martin’s quest to establish itself as a consistent championship contender.
