Max Verstappen is under investigation for a potential virtual safety car violation during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Dutch driver, who finished fifth after a late collision between Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz, is being scrutinized for overtaking cars after the checkered flag under virtual safety car conditions.
Footage from Verstappen’s RB20 revealed that he pulled alongside title rival Lando Norris and Mercedes’ George Russell, seemingly congratulating both drivers. As a result, Verstappen was summoned by the stewards to explain the incident.
The weekend proved to be a tough one for the three-time world champion. With Norris out in Q1, Verstappen had a chance to gain points but ultimately finished just behind the McLaren driver. Additionally, he struggled to match the pace of his teammate, Perez, who was on track for his first podium in 12 races before his collision with Sainz.
Despite Perez’s efforts, Red Bull’s Constructors’ Championship hopes took a hit, as McLaren now holds a 20-point lead going into the Singapore Grand Prix. McLaren’s charge was led by Oscar Piastri, who claimed his second career victory. Reflecting on the team’s progress, Piastri said, “It definitely goes down as one of the better races of my career.”
He added, “I think considering where we started when I joined the team last year, we were literally last and now we’re leading the world championship. It’s a credit to the team for the turnaround in the last 18 months… It’s a massive team effort and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
