The San Francisco 49ers were fined $100,000 by the NFL after an incident involving inactive player Dre Greenlaw during a recent game against the Arizona Cardinals. The altercation occurred in the third quarter when 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward was engaged with Cardinals tight end Trey McBride near the sideline. After McBride pushed Ward into the 49ers’ bench, Ward retaliated by grabbing McBride’s face mask.
Green law, who is currently on the physically unable to perform list, intervened by shoving McBride away from Ward. Although no penalties were called during the game, the league later issued fines to all three players involved. McBride was fined $9,545 for unnecessary roughness, Ward received an $11,255 fine for the face mask infraction, and Greenlaw was penalized $14,069 for unnecessary roughness.
In addition to the fines assessed to the players, the 49ers organization faced a substantial penalty for breaching a rule that prohibits inactive players from making unnecessary contact with opponents during games. This incident serves as a reminder of the league’s strict enforcement of player conduct rules, even involving those not actively participating in the game.
